English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards provide educators of English language learners (ELLs) with a curriculum and assessment planning tool for content area language objectives. The proficiency-based strands help educators determine individual ELLs' English language proficiency levels and how to appropriately challenge them in reaching the next levels.

Spanish Language Arts (SLA) Standards Spanish Language Arts (SLA) Standards were modeled after ELP Standards with the goal of assisting in planning curriculum for bilingual and two-way immersion programs. Research supports the notion that students benefit when they have foundational literacy skills in their first language and when schools incorporate their primary language and culture into the classroom.
